The Nida School of Translation Studies exists to advance research in translation through a transdisciplinary approach that brings together varying perspectives and methodologies, while challenging traditional boundaries and encouraging original thinking about what translation is and the roles it plays in a globalized world. The theme of our 2019 session, Translating and Interpreting in Contexts of Conflict and Crisis, calls participants to engage in an exploration of the many complex challenges, both practical and ethical, that are faced daily by translators and interpreters working in fragile contexts and crisis situations. Join us for a stimulating time of discussion and discovery, led by our two distinguished Nida Professors and a diverse roster of Visiting Faculty.
NSTS Program and Application Information
Nida Professors
Barbara Moser-Mercer is Professor of Conference Interpreting and founding Director of InZone, University of Geneva. Her research focuses on cognitive neuro-science aspects of the interpreting process and on the human performance dimension of skill development and expertise, as well as on pedagogical approaches to digital learning in fragile contexts. She has co-developed the Virtualinstitute©, a virtual learning environment specifically designed for the acquisition of complex skills, which she has been leveraging in partnership with various international organizations (including the ICRC, ILO, UNHCR and UNAMA) for enhancing the skills of interpreters working in conflict zones and to advance formal and non-formal higher education in emergencies (HEiE). She was a member of the European Union's High Level Group on Multilingualism and coordinated the European Masters in Conference Interpreting, funded by the European Parliament and the European Commission. She is also an active conference interpreter and member of the International Association of Conference Interpreters.
Sharon O’Brien is Associate Professor of Translation and Language Technology in the School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies, Dublin City University. She is former Director of the Centre for Translation and Textual Studies and current Coordinator of the International Network on Crisis Translation (INTERACT), an EU-funded Horizon 2020 research project on translation in emergency and disaster scenarios. The interdisciplinary Network involves four academic partners across the globe, NGOs and commercial organisations who are focused on researching aspects of policy, simplification of content, translation technology, training of citizen translators, and ethics in crisis translation settings. For the past 10 years, O’Brien has additionally been an investigator for ADAPT, a national Centre for Digital Content Technology funded by Science Foundation Ireland. She has supervised numerous PhD students and several post-docs. She previously worked as a language technology consultant in the localisation industry.

The registration fee for NSTS 2019 is €1700. A limited number of partial bursaries will be made available to applicants who demonstrate need and merit.
